The history of the Hotel Conde Aznar is the history of the Abós family, who have been committed to the hotel and restaurant trade for three generations.

The founders of the hotel, Mamaína and Santiago, started a business in the 30s, as owners of a butcher’s in Benasque, where they lived above the shop. It soon became a welcome stop for walkers looking for somewhere to shelter from the winter weather and where they could try the delicious stews prepared by Mamaína.

Settling in Jaca in the 1950s, they decided to use their experience to focus on the hotel trade, acquiring a small property with seven bedrooms, called the Villa Edelweiss, this now constitutes the Hotel Conde Aznar and La Cocina Aragonesa restaurant.

A little while later, and with the help of their children, they began a large expansion, adding a further eight bedrooms.

The second refurbishment came a few years later and was the initiative of the second generation, which by then included Mertxe Aldanondo, wife of José María Abós, younger son of the founders. The hotel now had 24 rooms and it was at this time it was given its current name of the Hotel Conde Aznar, chosen in honour of the Aragonese Count who led the troops from Jaca in the Reconquest of Spain.

La Cocina Aragonesa Restaurant was also opened during this time, taking its name from the traditional kitchens where families would gather beside the hearth.

Although these customs are things of the past many of the tools and much of the furniture from the period have been preserved and are used in the decoration of the hotel, helping to maintain the authentic, traditional decor.

In 2005, when the third generation of the family joined the business – Mertxe and José Luís’s daughter Maider and her husband Pepe – the Conde Aznar became a three star hotel, having been renovated and expanded to a total of 34 rooms, each room different, well equipped and designed with every comfort.

With the refurbishment came two further additions: the bar-cafeteria Calixto and the garden room, ‘El Jardin de Cristal´. The first, a cosy meeting place, which still maintains its ancient structure of wooden beams, highlighting the design of the bar, where a feature has been made of the antique eaves of the building and a magnificent coffered ceiling, also of wood.

El Jardin de Cristal, located in the garden of the hotel and shaded by an immense 100-year-old fir tree, is a large glass room with air-conditioning in summer and heating in winter, equally suited to the hosting of family and social gatherings or for organising training days, business meetings and professional events.
